Well that’s not exactly true, you do tend to lose weight– but that’s only in your wallet!

A few years ago, I was totally brainwashed by the fitness industry. I thought fitness was the way to solve all your problems. You could eat what you wanted and simply burn it off, exercise to relieve stress and of course exercise to look better. And while all this is true there is a better and easier way to get to the end result. This really hit home when I was talking to a wellness expert at a conference on health and fitness. She told me that some of the wellness programs she designed focused on WHY people are over weight. I told her it was because people ate too much and she asked me to look at it from a different perspective. Most people today are educated enough to know that fast food, ice cream, chocolate etc have absolutely no nutritional value and are detrimental to their health. So WHY do we eat these things? WHY do we not exercise daily and consistently knowing that it’s good for us? WHY do we not do what we should? I mean after all it will make us feel better, look better and live longer. Those are some pretty compelling reasons.
This wellness expert went on to explain that health is the full integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Areas of spiritual wellness, emotional wellness, social wellness, occupational wellness and of course physical wellness all interact to improve our happiness, health and quality of life.
The conversation really got me thinking that true health is about so much more than just working out. And soon, I began to see how limiting fitness clubs even were. The more I started examining fitness and nutrition centres is the more ridiculous I realized they were. At the best, they are incomplete. At the most they are a waste of money. Do you know how many members of fitness clubs do aerobic classes and workout on the treadmill? Yet, these are two of the least productive ways to get results. If you go back and read last weeks blog it’s the confusion of what to do and when to do it that is causing gym members to turn to what’s ‘easy’ or fun. It sure doesn’t lead to the results you want or need though.
