It’s Not Your Fault!
Every day I hear stories about people who don’t know how to lose weight, don’t know how to tone and firm or don’t know how to stick to their ‘diets’. I hear stories about people who have worked hard and made some amazing progress only to have all those results disappear when they stopped their ‘program’, ‘diet’ or whatever flavor of the day they were on.
The truth is people are getting FATTER, eating WORSE and getting UNHEALTHIER. Add that to the INCREASE in stress and it’s a very bad situation. Wait, ‘bad’ is not the right word for it. It is ruining our quality of life, causing sickness, disease and death. We spend more money on pills and medication to fix ourselves than we do on proper, healthier ways to feel better. There is practically no money spent on preventative maintenance of our precious body and mind. Most people will spend more on their cell phone every month than they will on their gym membership or vitamins.
We are more educated about fitness and nutrition than we were 10 years ago yet we are unhealthier. So why it this happening?
I will tell you why. Its called CONFUSION!!! There is so much information, misinformation, conflicting and contradicting information that the average person has no clue where to begin. They are left to their own accord to try something they think will work.
Don’t eat meat because it’s too fatty, don’t eat chicken because there are too many chemicals in it, don’t eat fish because of the mercury, don’t eat vegetables because of the pesticides. Oh wait, you can eat free range, organic meat and chicken, organic vegtables, deep sea fish etc. Now I’m hearing that some organic places are not really organic and that there are benefits to some organic vegetables but not others. What? Really?
Go on a high protein diet, go on a low protein diet………. a watermelon diet, a grapefruit diet, a vegetarian diet, low sodium, small meals, don’t eat after 6pm, don’t eat or drink high calorie fruit, good carbs/bad cards, low calorie foods are not really low calories and zero calorie soda is bad for you, 100% all grain cereal is actually loaded with sugar and ……….omg, my head is going to explode. There is so much information overload that nobody can keep up with it.
And can the ‘average’ person be expected to know how to work out? Do I do weights, cardio, crossfit, high reps, low reps, lots of set, no sets, function training, group classes, how many days per week, how long should each workout be?
Being overweight, out of shape or unhealthy is not your fault! There is simply too much conflicting and contradicting information out there that overwhelms most people. And what do we do when we are overwhelmed? Nothing! We all know that feeling of being overwhelmed. It just makes me want to run for my cozy bed and hide under the covers.
Now some may seek the so-called ‘experts for help’. But it seems like most fitness clubs and nutrition places only want to take your money. Can someone please explain to me why you should have to pay for personal training? Isn’t that why somebody joins a club to start with? If I just wanted to use a treadmill on my own with no instruction I would buy one for my house. A fitness club is supposed to be the place to get fit and have somebody show me how to do that. Instead the simplest question turns into a personal training pitch and justification as to why I should spend $1000+ on my body. Hey, I’m all for investing in your health but todays modern fitness club has turned into an equipment rental facility. And even at that, fitness clubs are so focused on the exercise component of health they rarely address the nutrition side of it which is at least, equally important. In many ways the old days were better as fitness clubs focused on service and personal attention for FREE. It was part of your membership. It’s been many years since some genius decided that you should have to pay more to have somebody actually get you results.
Now don’t get me wrong, there are some amazing trainers out there that can take you to levels that you never dreamed of. Having a specialist give you EXTRA attention, specialized programming and monitoring you should be extra but what I’m talking about is basic service and programming to get you results.
This is the exact reason we have seen two of Toronto’s largest fitness chain go broke last year. Both Premier Fitness- 36 locations and Extreme Fitness- 15 locations were huge companies. Premier sales for 2012 were $96 million and Extreme probably not far off that. But they went broke because they forgot, or maybe never knew, how to service the member.
And let me tell you that the nutrition centres are no better. You are either paying for someone to measure you and have a bunch of ladies clap when you lose 5 pounds or you are left with huge bills after buying their proprietary diet foods. No wonder the diet and nutrition industry is a billion dollar industry but people keep keeping fatter and unhealthier.
Let me say this again and really highlight it:
DIET AND NUTRITION IS A BILLION-DOLLAR INDUSTRY AND YET PEOPLE KEEP GETTING FATTER AND UNHEALTHIER.
We cannot argue with facts and the above is true. And it’s true because the diet and nutrition centres do NOT work. Simple. Pure. Truth.
I am going to get a bunch of people tell me I am wrong and that they lost weight at a diet centre or they know somebody who lost weight. Yup, there are lots of wonderful success stories that these companies can boast about. But, as a percentage, very few members actually get results. Or, the ones who do get results simply put the weight back on once they stop with the program.
And this is the trickery that many diet and nutrition centres have up their sleeve. When you stop buying the food or stop going to the meetings your results stop or you lose all the great results you had and soon you are right back to square one. I’m sorry but health, fitness and nutrition is a life long commitment.
You may be thinking this long-winded blog is a very unusual post since we are a fitness club and nutrition centre. Well you would be right to think that except we are NOT a fitness club OR a nutrition centre. We are an ACTVITY centre. This isn’t just semantics folks.
