Doing Nothing Won’t Make it Worse.
I hear this a lot. Actually, most things in life are like this. Do nothing and nothing really happens. Well, except maybe paying your taxes. If you don’t do something about that you can expect big problems.
But lets face it, much of the time we leave things, forget to do something and nothing happens. If we don’t clean the house it stays the same, if we don’t look for a new job we don’t get a new job, if we don’t go shopping for that new dress we simply don’t have a new dress. We are quite conditioned to think that doing nothing or being complacent leads to……well, nothing! And, truthfully, in most cases, that is true because life simply goes on.
When it comes to your heath and fitness though nothing could be further from the truth. From the time we are born the body begins the process of aging. We don’t just grow, we age. And along with aging comes many changes in the body and the brain.
Nothing could be more true when we hit middle age. There are many natural changes that occur in our body including a change in the appearance of our skin, thinning of the bones, menopause and much more.
This how however, is not what I want to discuss with you today. The point is simply that if you do nothing your body and health will deteriote naturally. That’s just the way it is. What I really want to discuss is not doing anything about your dietary and exercise habits. It seems most people get caught in this cycle of poor nutrition and fitness habits and never change. I mean why do we brush our teeth multiple times a day? Would we ever consider missing this ritual? Oh sure, maybe on that odd occasion when we are just way too tired to brush our teeth or take our make up off but how often does that really happen? And what would happen if we didn’t brush our teeth at all?
Why then, do we not put the same level of importance on exercise and nutrition? In our very first blog we spoke of the mass amounts of confusion with all the information overload out there. It’s so overwhelming that we tend to end up doing nothing at all because we simply don’t know the answers. I understand this and I know that most people need help to get on a proper nutrition and fitness program.
But this is not what I am talking about. Because even if brushing our teeth were complicated we would still find a way to do it because the alternative would be a really nasty mouth, smelly breath and some bad teeth. Yet with nutrition and fitness we all too often don’t make the required changes and get into the mindset that it wont get worse. I am here to tell you that it will. It will get worse. Way worse.
Have you ever had a conversation with someone who tells you that they need to lose 5-10 pounds but you know its actually more? A lot more! Well those people really did only need to lose 5 pounds but that was years ago. In their head they still look the same and feel the same. But over the years the constant neglect of nutrition and fitness has made them more unhealthy and they have added weight during that time period. And by weight I mean fat.
The scale is the great deceiver. Maybe you didn’t gain weight or maybe it was just a few pounds. But as you age you lose your muscle and that muscle gives you shape. The perfect example is the largest muscle in your body; the butt. When you are younger your butt tends to be firm and fills out nicely in a half circle type shape. But as we get older and the muscle mass decreases the the skin starts to sag down and you lose the nice shape. Fat cells accumulate in the area and the rear gets a sagging to it. This is actually happening all over your body and you may not even realize it because the scale lies. Muscle weighs more than fat so if the scale is remaining relatively the same you are replacing the shapely muscle with blob like fat. So while you may think you haven’t gained any weight, and you actually haven’t, you have increased the amount of fat you have in your body.
The answer to all these problems are proper habits. Brushing our teeth was a habit we got into from a very young age and it gets to a point where we don’t even think about it. The most successful people in life have the best daily habits. Think about it, if you got up every day and did the exact same thing as the most successful person then you too would be success.
Your fitness and nutrition need to be daily, life long habits where we don’t even think about it. One of the easiest ways to do this is through gradual changes. The cold turkey methods simply do not work. Let me correct myself, they do work but they are temporary fixes. The changes I am talking about need to be for life. Gradual changes are easier to do, cause less stress on you and your body and have lasting results. You must change the way you think about what you put in your body and what your current activities levels are. If you don’t you are going to worse than you are now. Doing nothing will cause you to deteriorate faster than you need to.
Until next week, I challenge you to make just one SMALL change in your daily nutrition or fitness habits. Let me know what that is, I would love to hear about it.
Next week’s blog is going to discuss exactly how you can get into healthy eating habits and get on a consistent life long exercise program that will help you live longer and live better!
